Welcome to University College
University College is the home of lower division advising and academic support services for all students, as well as pedagogical professional development for faculty. It provides an academic home for advising of students with 45 hours of college credit or less, students who have not chosen a major, and students who are majoring in University Studies. It also houses the following divisions: First Year Experience, Student Success, and Academic Excellence. These divisions cover Freshman Seminar, academic success coaching, tutoring, supplemental instruction, the honors program, programs for “twice exceptional” students, support for undergraduate student research, and a Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence. University College faculty teach Freshman Seminar (UNIV) courses in both thematic and math and English-intensive formats. Affiliated faculty are those who are housed in upper division academic schools but regularly teach sections of UNIV as needed, lead special programs such as the Honors Program or Twice Exceptional Program, or help with special University College initiatives. University College also coordinates UHV’s participation in the Houston Guided Pathways to Success initiative and in Academic Partnerships.
University College lays the foundation for student success in higher education by offering strong general education programming, academic support for underprepared students, advising and guidance, personal development opportunities to help students succeed in academia, and pedagogical professional development for faculty.
