Black History Month

In February 2021, the University of Houston-Victoria will observe National Black History Month with on-campus exhibits and special community events. Along with Victoria College and the Victoria Black History Committee, Inc. UHV annually co-sponsors a poster contest for area fifth-grade students and a Black History Month Reception.

Fifth-Grade Poster Contest 

Posters made by Victoria fifth-graders will be available for viewing during the month of February in the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson Street.

Black History Month Reception

UHV, VC and the Victoria Black History Committee Inc. host an annual reception honoring poster contest participants on the second Friday of every month. The winners of the contest receive scholarships and summer camp waivers. Winners, as well as honorable mentions, also receive goody bags from UHV and VC.

The 2020 winners were: Tuff Bretz of DeLeon Elementary School, first place, receiving a $2,000 scholarship to UHV and a summer camp waiver from VC; Khloe Sifuentes of DeLeon Elementary School, second place, receiving a $1,000 UHV scholarship and a VC summer camp waiver; and Pearl Valdez of DeLeon Elementary School, third place, who received a $500 UHV scholarship and a VC summer camp waiver. Honorable Mention awards were given to Blake Flessner of DeLeon Elementary and Trent Herman, Bear Steele and Xiomara Tunchez, all of Vickers Elementary.
