UHV Academic Affairs Preparation Regarding Corona Virus from UHV Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs Chance Glenn

March 4, 2020

UHV Faculty and Staff Members,

As news of the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues, it is important that we as an educational institution be prepared.  The Chancellor and her staff will make System-wide decisions while our President, and the Executive Committee will make UHV-based decisions regarding our operations in Victoria and Katy. They will be informed by regular updates from Federal, State, and Local officials.  As this unfolds I would like for the Academic unit to be prepared should we need to act. Therefore, please consider these three points:

  1. Please be flexible regarding student absences regarding illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance is that if you present any illness or symptoms you should stay home. Please be prepared to provide alternative means for assignments if possible as not to overly penalize students for being responsible.
  2. Please make sure that you have direct and consistent communication pathways to your students. Should we need to update students with changes to teaching modality, or assignment modifications, we need to be reasonably sure that there are reliable communications in place. For most it is Blackboard. Please be sure that you are utilizing it now and are familiar with the relevant tools that it offers. Keep your classes informed as much as you are able to during this time with relevant and responsible information.
  3. Should we need to go a position as an institution to close the campus, please be ready to port all courses to an online mode. The Deans have assessed the course offerings for their Schools and are confident that all courses could be delivered online if needed. This is a strength of ours they may prove beneficial at time like this. Please review all of your materials and be ready should we need to complete the semester in this manner. It is my hope, and I am sure it is yours as well, that we do not have to take this measure.

Please communicate with this office and your colleagues should you have further questions. We will coordinate this preparation through this office in conjunction with the Deans. Please review this link: https://www.uhv.edu/alert/ for UHV’s information to the community.
