Spring Semester Update to Faculty and Staff from UHV President Bob Glenn

Colleagues,

I hope that you and your families are safe and healthy. Thank you so for working so diligently as we face multiple challenges with the fire in University West and concerns about COVID-19.

I wanted to update you on the following decisions that have been made:

  • We previously announced the decision that spring semester courses will be offered online beginning Wednesday, March 25, through the remainder of the semester. We have asked students to reach out to their professors if they have any problems or concerns, and I would ask that you do everything you can to make this transition as seamless as possible for our students.
  • Events sponsored by UHV are canceled, no matter the size, through the end of the spring semester. Rather than continuing to provide updates based on the latest federal, state or local size limitations, we prefer to provide clear guidance for the near term. These restrictions include conferences, symposia and social gatherings. This does not preclude small internal meetings, where social distancing should be the touchstone. Spring commencement postponement decisions will be made by the end of the month, and we will update everyone at that time.
  • The vice presidents have been asked to meet with those who report to them to figure out ways we can continue to remain open and provide services to our students while still protecting all employees.
  • The UHV Library will be open the following hours: noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 8 p.m. Friday noon to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The library will be closed on Saturday. In addition, all electronic resources of library subscriptions and databases continue to be available 24/7. Virtual research services will be extended to the following hours: noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. Friday, and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
  • If you need help converting a face-to-face course to online or best practices for teaching online (content delivery, course communication, assignments and grading, etc.), please contact Bev Hoerig. A training schedule and additional teaching resources have been emailed by her and also posted in the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence Blackboard course. We will continually update you with additional resources, so please check the CTLE Blackboard course shell often. You also may reach out to your Instructional Technology coordinators in your school (Mary Borden, Kristy Holly and Harry Bashaw) for assistance in uploading content, creating tests, answering Blackboard how-to questions, etc.
  • We will continue to offer peer tutoring online through Upswing. Upswing is our appointment-making software for tutoring, so students can still make appointments with UHV tutors, but these will occur in real-time, online sessions. Students who have been moved into an online course from a face-to-face one should only make appointments with UHV tutors. These tutors are clearly labeled in Upswing. Students need special permission to meet with third-party tutors. If students need a tutor or you have additional questions about tutoring, please contact Eric Camarillo. At this time, only students can access Upswing.
  • The StudentSuccess Coaches still are here to assist both faculty and students. Please continue to submit progress reports and email the coaches about student concerns. They are available to connect with students through email, text, Zoom, Microsoft Teams and phone. If you have a student who would like to contact the coaches, please refer them to the shared email StudentSuccessAdvisor@uhv.edu until the coaches are able to return to their offices.
  • If you are an instructor with an attached supplemental instruction leader, the SI leader still will hold small group sessions through Upswing. However, the SI leaders also are encouraged to work with faculty to create additional video lectures or review handouts that can be posted in Blackboard.
  • We have Student Success Advocates who will be able to help students by providing encouragement, guidance and support during their transition to online education. Their purpose is to be an extension of the Student Success Coaches. They are eager to help and are always ready to assist and mentor their peers. If you would like to connect one of our Advocates with a student , please contact Cherlyn Hodge, and she will be happy to assist you.
  • Navigate is a tool to help refer at-risk students by making specific notations that lead to additional advising, tutoring or success coaching. Now more than ever, instructors should continue to use this tool to update us about students. We will be offering additional virtual training on how to use Navigate in the coming weeks. If you need any assistance in using Navigate, please contact Jesse McClain.
  • The Student Success Help Desk now is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information about services offered or to make a virtual appointment with the staff, please contact Heather Crow or Briana Vega.
