A Message From the President
Hello to all the UHV Jaguars, past and present, and all those who have supported UHV throughout the years.
Fifty years is a momentous milestone for our university, and we are excited to have the opportunity to share our anniversary with you. Ever since our university began in 1973 as a teaching center under the University of Houston, our institution has been fortunate to have the support of so many in this community and this region.
UHV and the Crossroads have become linked through the years. In fact, many of the cultural and community-focused events that are held in Victoria today can trace their roots back to the university and its personnel. For instance, the Victoria Symphony and the Victoria Bach Festival began through connections with UHV. Even today, UHV is continuing that tradition by hosting the UHV Small Business Development Center, which offers no-cost business advising and training opportunities as well as technical support to area small businesses in 11 counties in the region. UHV also created the Center for Regional Collaboration, which promotes regional community development by providing access to informational resources and professional expertise. Most recently, the university led the effort to raise more than $900,000 in order to bring Innovation Collective to the Victoria community to help support entrepreneurship in the area.
In addition, many industry leaders in the region are using UHV as a means of investing in the community through grants and educational programs, such as an annual grant from Alcoa Foundation, which UHV uses to offer opportunities for local students to learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.
Through the previous five decades, UHV has built a foundation that focuses first and foremost on serving its students by providing a quality, affordable education, whether they attend classes in Victoria, Katy or online. We intend to continue that mission far into the future, and we hope you will be part of that effort.
Now, I hope you will join us as we celebrate our golden jubilee. Together, we will look back at some of the major steps, achievements and accomplishments that brought us here as well as look to the future and see where we hope to be in the coming years. We’ve made a strong start, but we’ve only just begun.
